Kansans for No Income Tax, Inc., is a nonprofit working to educate Kansas taxpayers about the benefits of eliminating the state income tax. Kansas has begun undergoing a mammoth and seismic shift in tax policy. From having the 19th highest state and local tax burden in the country and a grim economic outlook to a record number of new business filings, over 40,000 new jobs created, the 10th lowest unemployment rate in the nation at 4.9%, and rising to 5th in the nation per capita in new economic development, things in Kansas are truly looking up.
So what changed? Governor Sam Brownback and the Kansas Legislature passed the most comprehensive tax reform in the state’s history, consolidating three tax income brackets into two, eliminating taxes on LLCs and sole proprietorships, and reducing the income tax burden more than any other Kansas state tax cut has before. From the second highest tax rate in the region to the second lowest, Kansas is leading the way in changing tax policy and reaping huge benefits. These benefits were amply demonstrated in February with record shattering revenue generated through fair, business-friendly tax policy.
Great strides have been made, but this is only the beginning. Kansans for No Income Tax is dedicated to continuing the efforts to remove the enormous tax burden on the citizens of Kansas. Governor Brownback has led the way and we are committed to continuing the fight. We must focus on a long-term path to prosperity for our state. This path must include the regulation of our tax base, with less reckless taxation and a business-friendly regulation environment.
Eliminating the state income tax does not mean other taxes increase. Reducing taxes does not mean eliminating essential services. It’s about job creation and economic growth. Eliminating the state income tax provides a permanent solution to grow our state, increase personal wealth, and provide a sensible tax base for our future.
